Evelyn Joshua Biography
Evelyn Joshua was born Evelyn Akabude on December 17, 1968, in Delta State to Mr and Mrs Nicholas Akabude. The reserved Evelyn was born a twin but her other is now late. She hails from Okala Okpuno in Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Evelyn briefly attended the Buchi Emecheta Primary School in Ezi Town (in Delta State) but failed to complete her primary school education. She was however able to complete her secondary school education after moving to Lagos in 1977 at Orile Primary School in Oshodi. Her secondary school education followed almost immediately—still within Oshodi.
Around the time Evelyn met her late husband, T.B. Joshua, she attended Assemblies of God Church and was working at the Nigerian Distilleries in Ota.
Upon getting married, Evelyn briefly moved to Ghana where she took some management courses. Evelyn has never been a pastor but has been supportive and actively assisting the husband’s ministry.
T.B. Joshua’s Proposal
According to Evelyn, the late T.B. Joshua proposed to her just 45 minutes of their first-ever meeting, while she was just twenty-two years.
It all started when Evelyn visited her older sister in the Ikotun-Egbe area of Lagos. Around the time, talks of a particular prophet were being discussed, with everyone giving positive reports of the said prophet. An Evelyn who needed spiritual guidance in her life at the thought meeting the prophet would not be a bad idea. First, she and her sister went to the home of the prophet to see him but did not meet him at home.
She tried again after a few months and somehow meet him at home. Surprisingly, she discovered the much-talked-about prophet was a young man. According to Evelyn, T.B. Joshua looked at her for some time and scribbled the word “Ejide” (meaning twin) on a piece of paper. The late Joshua then told her a couple of things about herself, some of which she knew beforehand and some she did not.
At the end of their conversation which was about forty-five minutes, T.B. Joshua proposed to her. Evelyn claimed she considered it strange but her heart agreed with it immediately. She would later ask him how he could see a lady the first time and propose to her. It was at this point that he told her about a vision he had some days ago. The two got married a few months after that period, with Evelyn stating it was a “divine arrangement” as she was “instructed” to go and see him on the morning of their first-ever meeting.
Evelyn and T.B. Joshua were married for thirty-one (31) years before the demise of the Prophet on June 5, 2021, just a few days from his birthday. Together, they have three (3) children namely; Serah, a lawyer who studied Law at the London School of Economics and was called to bar in 2015; Promise, a graduate of International Relations and Politics from the London School of Economics and; the third child’s name is not known to the media.
Weeks after the death of Prophet T.B. Joshua, media reports claimed the elders of the church, Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN) had appointed Evelyn Joshua as the church’s next successor to lead the church. Although, the Church elders claimed through a response from the church’s spokesman at the time that the Church had not yet decided. However, in July 2021, the church elders backtracked and announced that Evelyn Joshua would coordinate the affairs of the church, “for now”.
“Every member of The SCOAN, including the disciples and Emmanuel TV partners should see themselves as sons and daughters of Mrs. Evelyn Joshua who is an extension of her late husband, according to biblical injunction (Genesis 2:24).
“The general public is hereby advised to disregard all media reports insinuating that elders of the church have rejected Mrs. Evelyn Joshua as the new leader of the church.
“There was never a time when elders of the church sat together to deliberate on any succession issue.
“Be informed that at the appropriate time, the new leader of the ministry shall be made known, according to the move of the Holy Spirit.
“For now, Mrs. Evelyn Joshua is in charge of coordinating the affairs of the church.”
With this, it means, all of T.B. Joshua’s wealth and that of the church are Evelyn’s to control. A publication by a Nigerian media outlet claimed the church “legally” belongs to Evelyn being legally married to the late clergyman.
