In 12th of June 1993, there were presidential elections and one Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola who contested under Social Democratic Party (SDP) was widely believed to have emerged as the winner.

The election was also believed to have been the freest and fairest election Nigeria has ever conducted till date. However the 1993 election was annulled and canceled by the then Head of State, Gen Ibrahim Babangida, against the interest of the general public.

As a result of the annulment of the 1993 election, there arose a massive nationwide protest in Nigeria in solidarity for Moshood Kashimawo Olawale MKO Abiola.
